Multiple Subject Matter Waiver

Sacramento State

Sacramento, CA

The Multiple Subject Matter Waiver is designed to meet the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) multiple subject matter requirement for students entering a California Multiple Subject or Special Education teaching credential program. The subject matter requirement can be met either through a subject matter program approved by CTC or by taking a state approved content exam (currently the California Subject Exam for Teachers, the CSET).
Subject matter programs are not degrees or concentrations; instead they are a series of courses that allow a student to meet the requirements for admission to a teaching credential program. Subject matter coursework in the Multiple Subject Matter Waiver meets CSET requirements by offering specific curricula in seven different subjects: Language and Literature; Mathematics; Natural and Physical Sciences; Social Sciences and Humanities; the Arts; Human Development; and Physical Education. In order to meet the Multiple Subject Matter Waiver, all courses must be completed with a grade of "C-" or better.  Students must also complete a BA or BS degree (with any major) to enter a teaching credential program. The Subject Matter Waiver is open to all majors. The coursework for the multiple subject matter waiver is embedded within the Liberal Studies Major. To teach public school in California, students must also complete a teaching credential program.
